Writing and Publishing FAQs Answered

What are the steps to getting published?

If you’re self-publishing, you need to hire an editor (or get someone to edit the book for you). Other service providers you’ll need to source include cover art, graphic design and layout, printing, PR/marketing, and distribution. Some online services assist with all of the above. Do your research and compare not just cost but quality, and the right fit for your project. Some service providers in Antigua and Barbuda are listed on this site. You’ll also need to get an ISBN.

If you’re not self-publishing, you still need an edit or at least a critique to make sure the manuscript is in good shape. Research through literary boards, writers networks, and resources like those available on this site’s Opportunities page, agents or publishers who represent books like yours, writers like you; follow their posted submission guidelines (you might want to get someone to assist with crafting your query letter), and take your shot. This path typically involves a lot of rejection and continued submissions. If you believe in the manuscript, don’t give up.

There are pros and cons re traditional v. self or even hybrid publishing (there are links on the resources page discussing that). Just take the time and dig in; do the research, determine the best option for you, and pursue it.

How do I go about choosing an illustrator?

Look around in art and illustrator communities – or just look at children’s books online or in your local bookstore and reach out (via their business page or social media) to any illustrators, whose aesthetics you like, for a costing.

These answers are not absolute; please do your own research; also see the Resources page on this site. This is just an attempt to provide some guidance via the questions I sometimes receive.
