June is #ReadCaribbean Month – Post 10


I went to my first concert in a while and it was a fundraiser and celebration for legendary Antiguan and Barbudan pannist (and multi-panorama winning composer and arranger) Victor ‘Babu’ Samuel. Dancing under the open sky (on the breeziest night in days) as young pannists jubilantly played calypso classics (like Short Shirt’s ‘Nobody go run me’) as we sang along was not on my Saturday bingo card but I think we all won. The shadow over the scene wasn’t the jumbies emcee Sly J reminded us were in the tamarind trees we stood under, but that the concert wasn’t just for fun – Babu himself (pictured in this photo I took years and years ago of him rehearsing the National Youth Pan Orchestra for which he was a tutor and mentor, as mentioned when I wrote about the programme in CREATIVE SPACE) has suffered a stroke and couldn’t be…
