In an event open to the public, the Caribbean South chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) held its official relaunch on December 7 at Nalis in Port-of-Spain. The reins of leadership were formally passed on to the new Caribbean South regional adviser, Marsha Gomes-McKie. The former occupant of this post, Joanne Johnson, addressed the attendees, speaking of the history of the organisation in Trinidad and Tobago and providing wider context for the society’s inception.

Established locally in 2005, SCBWI was founded in 1971 by a collective of children’s book writers based in Los Angeles. As Johnson explained, the organisation has since become a global entity and a force to be reckoned with, currently encompassing over 22,000 members in more than 70 official registered chapters.
